Saffron Gardens
Horndon-on-the-Hill
, Essex

Pictured above is Eve Webster, a current resident of Saffron Gardens who kindly sent me the photos of the various Horndon properties for which I am most grateful.

Saffron Garden is the former household of Elizabeth Spitty as the wife of Robert Charles Pollett.
Saffron Garden Farm (also known as Cantis) is on the site of what is believed to have been a small monastery. Saffron was produced in quantity in Essex and was used for medicinal purposes as well as a dye for cloth. This would have been useful when the wool trade flourished in the village. One of the previous owners of Saffron Gardens gave a piece of land as a site for the Vicarage in Orsett Road.

The most famous speech of the Virgin Queen was given in a field a little bit north of West Tilbury church. The night before her great speech, Elizabeth stayed at Saffron Gardens in Horndon. "Queen Elizabeth Slept Here", was published by the Thurrock Local History Society to mark the four hundredth aniversary of this important event.
