Major Thomas Jenner Spitty of the Essex Rifles moved to Hurlocks from
Hill House. Hurlocks is double-fronted residence described as being in
Back Lane or the High Street. From the old O/S map the property would
appear to run from one street to the other.
Once installed at Hurlock one of Major Spitty's first acts was to have a gazebo built on the roof, and a telescope installed. From this lofty tower he would watch the work on his farms during the day, and study astronomy at night. Hurlocks features in a Sale Catalogue of The Spitty Estates in 1917
