Grice House - 'Grices'
Horndon-on-the-Hill,
Essex

|
Grices is the former home of Clara Spitty Broughton (died 22 Jul 1918 Gazette notice). Grices is an eighteenth century listed Grade II house. It is said to have an older house inside dating from the sixteenth century. Like other old houses in this area, it is reputed to have a tunnel leading out from the cellar and down to the river. This seems an incredibly long way, but if it did exist and went that far, it would have been ideal for smugglers. In the early 1800's when the house was occupied by Miss Spitty Broughton, there used to be peach trees growing in the walled garden adjacent to South Hill. Also of note are the beautiful old Holm Oak trees. These are evergreen and there is a conservation order on them. There is a bay hedge just iside the garden wall. |
