Monumental inscriptions at the parish church of St.
Mary Magdalene, Great Burstead. Recorded February 1994.
Includes pen and ink drawing of church by Charles Grigg Tait taken
from The Parish Churches of South West Essex, notes on the church,
indexes of persons, places in Essex, places out of Essex,
occupations and stonemasons, with maps of churchyard and church.
Memorials in the churchyard include those to Thomas Gunns 'Gospel
Preacher', 1667; Andrew Hubbard, innholder, 1719; Revd. William
Master, rector of East Hanningfield, 1774; Charles Bernard of
Little Bardfield, late apprentice to Robert Chaplyn, apothecary of
Billericay who died of smallpox, 1748; John Nevill, farrier, died
1770; John Reve, citizen and draper of London, 1665; Revd. William
Evan Evans, priest in charge of St. Martin, Plaistow, 1940;
Private W.T. White, The Border Regiment, died 1945; John Henry
Ward justice of the peace for Grenada, British West Indies, 1911;
Private Ernest Turner killed in action in France 1917; Edwin
William and Cecil James Cottis killed in action in France 1918;
Thomas Waldron, late surveyor of H.M. Customs, 1932; William

Peverel, High Sheriff in 1770, died 1786; Samuel Bridge, 'late
Minister of Great Bursted in Essex who for nigh twenty years
continued an able faithfull zealous painfull powerfull preacher of
ye Gospell in this place', 1661; Captain John Wood of 5th Regiment
of Bombay Native Infantry, died in Bombay, 1804 'as he was about
to revisit England after an absence of 15 years'; Thomas Chaplyn,
surgeon 'died of a consumption', 1778; Ann Abbutt, died 1759
bequeathed £100 interest to be distributed between 5 poor widows
and called Fishpoole's Gift; Flight Lieutenant Denys Alban Ashton
killd at Tobruk, 1944; John Sperling George Hanson of the Wanganui
