Thomas Sprittey of Rettendon, gentleman, and wife, Mary (formerly
widow and executrix of John James of Canvey Island in Prittlewell),
to James Matthews of South Benfleet, mariner, and John James of
Bowers Gifford, yeoman
Messuage and farm (50 acres) on Canvey Island in Prittlewell, late
in occupation of said John James, deceased; Suttons Farm (25
acres) in South Benfleet now or late in occupation of James
Waller; two cottages in South Benfleet in occupations of John
Brewett and Adolphus Lans; "The Crowne Inn" in Rayleigh,
now or late in occupation of Thomas Hansell; right of dower of
Mary in messuage and land in Bowers Marsh in Bowers Gifford, late
in occupation of John James deceased and now in occupation of said
John James, party hereto
Recites Pre-nuptial Settlement, 20 February 1712/3, between (i)
said Thomas Spittey by description of Thomas Spittey of Bowers
Gifford, gentleman, (ii) Mary James, widow (now wife of said
Thomas Spittey), Joseph Hazwell of North Benfleet, clerk, and
William Massa of Brentwood, baker, whereby it was agreed, inter
alia, that if the marriage was solemnized it would be lawful for
Mary to sell or otherwise dispose of the property which descended
to her as heir of Lawrence Skylder, deceased, her father, or which
she subsequently purchased, or in which she had right of dower as
widow of John James
