Butcher's was a legacy in the will of Ambrose Spitty of Rayleigh proved in 1772 and is also mentioned in ERO document D/DSu/E4.

"I do give and devise unto my son Ambrose Spitty all that freehold messuage and premises called Butchers wherein he dwells together with all the freehold lands thereunto belonging and all the copyhold lands now occupied therewith / all my copyhold lands being already surrendered to the use of my last Will / and now in his occupation situate lying and being in the Parish of Rettendon in the County aforesaid the foresaid copyhold lands lies on the same side of a lane leading from Gooses Common to Rettendon Church that the same freehold messuage and premises called Butchers lies and are devided by the lane from the rest of my copyhold lands hereafter mentioned which freehold lands called Butchers and the said copyhold lands now occupied by him therewith containing in the whole about eighty acres fifty eight of which are freehold and twenty two copyhold together with all eight of commonage belonging to the said premises"
